Why tattoo pain changes by placement.
Bone, padding, nerve density, and session length explain more than a single pain number.
Four variables matter
- Less padding over bone usually feels sharper.
- Areas with dense nerve endings can feel more intense.
- Thin or mobile skin can be harder to settle into.
- Long sessions can make even moderate areas feel difficult.
A map is a baseline
Placement maps describe typical experience, not a promise. Sleep, stress, hydration, technique, and your own sensitivity can move the experience in either direction.
Plan the session, not just the spot
Ask your artist about breaks, expected session length, and whether the design can be split. A realistic plan is more useful than trying to prove you can tolerate a particular number.
